COP 15 Side Event
The Arctic Athabaskan Council (AAC) will be in attendance at the upcoming 15th Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The signatories will
meet in Copenhagen, Denmark from December 7-18, 2009 to discuss the successor agreement, termed "Post
Kyoto". This meeting may very well be the most important meeting of our lifetimes. Additionally, the AAC has applied for a side event at the COP 15 meeting. "Side Events" are open events which take place in the morning, during lunch or in the evening. Side Event topics are related to the issues being negotiated during the main meeting sessions. Former Vice-President of the United States, Mr. Al Gore, has agreed to attend and speak at the event. The title of the event is Caribou,
people and resiliency in Arctic North America: With a presentation by Mr. Al
Gore
and the theme is
Barren-ground caribou are declining. Is this due to natural cycles, climate
change, or both? Dr. Robert Watson chairs this session featuring Mr. Al Gore,
aboriginal hunters and elders, and scientists. This event will focus on
caribou, climate change, community resilience and adaptation.
The AAC will send a delegation including community elders and hunters to participate in the meetings and side event. Please check back for more news. To find out more, contact Cindy Dickson at 1(867) 393-9214.
